Apple buys Darwin AI startup

Darwin AI, a Canadian startup that develops visual inspection solutions, became the property of Apple. The company specialises in machine vision and learning and its use in smart manufacturing.
DarwinAI provides an AI platform for inspecting the quality of products and technologies. The startup’s customers include prominent Fortune 500 companies, including Audi, Arm, BMW, and Honeywell. The developers of the COVID-Net system have also used DarwinAI technology. The latter allows COVID-19 to be detected using chest X-rays.

How the startup’s technology works

In one of his interviews, DarwinAI CEO Sheldon Fernandez discussed the technology’s features. According to him, the company uses the latest AI training approaches for its solution, which allows it to achieve high results in the visual evaluation of printed circuit boards. The artificial intelligence of DarwinAI analyses designs and determines their manufacturability. The system also enables quality control during the manufacturing process. This allows early detection and correction of faults.
The technology learns quickly. The more it is in use, the more intelligent and accurate the AI is. For example, the system can be 93% accurate at the start. After a few months, this figure rises to 97%.
It is worth noting that the startup’s product has huge potential for the healthcare sector. The company is developing medical imaging solutions that will enable early diagnosis of diseases.

Benefits of machine vision and visualisation

DarwinAI specialises in visual intelligent systems, which offer some benefits for their implementation in various sectors. These advantages include:
1. Robots can assess objects and their surroundings using innovative cameras.
2. This enables them to decide on the best action to take in a given situation.
3. Training AI requires analysing and collecting a large number of objects.
4. Using many robots for different activities will help solve this problem.
5. They can collect data, analyse it and feed the information into a single machine learning centre.
6. The data can then be shared with robots in other companies without revealing details.
7. This approach protects privacy and increases the speed of AI learning.
DarwinAI emphasises the importance of security issues in the operation of its AI systems. The company has managed to balance obtaining massive amounts of data for training and preserving privacy. As a result, the system demonstrates high efficiency and guarantees protection against information leakage.
Security is also one of Apple’s priorities. Analysts do not rule out the fact that ensuring privacy was one of the arguments for the IT giant’s purchase of the Canadian startup.
